I have been working on changes in leukocyte migration and tissue remodeling in Leishmania infection. We have shown that Leishmania infection impairs integrin activation decreasing macrophage adherence to connective matrix components. Disturbances in leukocyte homing and survival are also involved in the changes observed in the spleen in visceral leishmaniasis, such as lymphoid follicle disruption and plasma cells accumulation in the spleen red pulp.
