Applications are invited for a bioinformatician or scientific programmer within the St George’s Bioinformatics Unit. The Unit brings together bioinformatics expertise across the University and associated St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working collaboratively on a range of projects and training initiatives. The position will collaborate with scientists and clinicians and lead the bioinformatics components of a range of translational projects in the fields of infectious disease and human genomics. Active areas of research include clinically focused projects developing tools to predict drug resistance in patient bacterial isolates and investigate transmission in hospital settings as well as more research focused questions; pathogens studied include, but are not limited to, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Klebsiella pneumoniae andStaphylococcus aureus.
The successful candidate will have experience in bioinformatics and/or biological research computing with strong programming skills (e.g. Perl, Python, and/or R) Previous experience working with genomic data and knowledge/experience of developing automated pipelines would be advantageous. A PhD/postgraduate qualification or more than 2 years’ experience in bioinformatics / genomics or research computing will be required for this role.
