Clinical Research Fellow (Leishmaniasis)

We are seeking a highly motivated Clinical Research Fellow, based at the Centre for Immunology and Infection - a joint initiative between the Department of Biology at the University of York and the Hull York Medical School.

You will demonstrate a commitment to the pursuit of excellence in research and, under the direction of nominated supervisors, work towards the completion of a PhD thesis.  Key responsibilities will be to assist in the delivery of an MRC award which seeks to develop a human challenge model as an integral part of the development pipeline for prophylactic leishmaniasis vaccines. Other duties will include participation in clinical practice, undertaking medical duties as appropriate and contributing to teaching, training and research activities. 

A medical registered practitioner, you will be employed by the University of York, and hold an honorary contract with York Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.  Holding an MB, BS or equivalent qualification, you will be a higher specialist trainee (ST3 or above) in infectious diseases/tropical medicine, clinical immunology or dermatology, and have proven skills in specific clinical procedures appropriate to the level.  A good understanding of clinical risk management is essential.  You will have experience of working in a multi-professional team, demonstrating experience and awareness in and outside speciality/medicine. Full training in research methods and good clinical practice will be provided, but an understanding of research methodologies and evidence of research capability is required.

The clinical fellow will have the agreed academic supervisors and a Thesis Advisory Panel (TAP), which usually comprises the supervisors and two other members of academic staff, one of whom acts as the Chair and is independent from the supervisors. The TAP provides academic and pastoral support and structure for the student. On appointment, in conjunction with their supervisor, Thesis Advisory Panel (TAP), and if appropriate the Training Director for Academic Research and the HYMS PG Centre, the fellow will complete a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and be able to select the necessary modules from the HYMS Post Graduate Training Selection list both to help with their research project and for professional development as a researcher.

It is expected that 0.2fte will be designated for clinical practice, with 0.8fte designated to undertaking research.

This is a full time position, funded for 3 years.  Salary will be up to £53,169 per annum depending upon previous training and experience, within the clinical academic scale.
