Chief Operating Officer
The London School of Hygiene &Tropical Medicine is looking to appoint a Unit Chief Operating Officer (GCOO) to the MRC Unit the Gambia at LSHTM. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the operations within the Unit, and to build and develop the integration with central services at LSHTM.
The post-holder will be a key member of the Unit’s Senior Management Team, as well as being head of the local operations group, and a member of LSHTM Management Board.
The post-holder will be responsible for providing high-level support and advice to the Unit Director in their leadership and management of the Unit. The post-holder leads and manages the Unit’s operational services (financial, administrative, HR, IT, technical and support departments) as well as ensuring robust governance and accountability in line with LSHTM and MRC policies, and in compliance with Gambian legislation. The role will also be responsible for logistics, procurement and project management. With accountability for the budget, the role holder will be responsible for all stages of the budget process, including planning, complex resource management, and management of capital investment.
The successful candidate will have significant, demonstrable leadership and operational experience gained in an organization of scale and complexity, and will possess the business acumen and credibility to meet the challenge of this senior role. You will be comfortable and adept at handling competing operational demands, whilst ensuring the workforce delivers strategic objectives effectively. You will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a sophisticated and flexible approach to senior stakeholder management and influencing. A relevant first degree is essential. The GCOO will report to the Unit Director and will be accountable to the LSHTM Chief Operating Officer. This is a challenging but highly rewarding opportunity for the right candidate.
The post is full time and permanent, based at the Unit’s research facility in Fajara in The Gambia, and the postholder will also spend time at the Unit’s field stations.
The salary for this post is up to £80,000 per annum. The post will be subject to LSHTM terms and conditions of employment. Annual leave entitlement is 30 days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS pension scheme is available. A package of overseas allowances is available depending on whether the successful candidate would need to relocate to take up this position.
