Biography:

I initially did a BA degree in Microbiology at Trinity College Dublin, followed by a PhD in autoimmunity at the Royal Dental Hospital of London. After a period as a postdoc at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School working on malaria, I moved to the LSHTM in 1985. Initially I worked on the immunology of leprosy but this then led me into tuberculosis, BCG vaccination and biomarkers. I now also help as Special Advisor on our Overseas Programmes in Africa.

Our research aims to understand the basis of protective immunity against tuberculosis and in particular to identify biomarker signatures that would help in the development of new TB vaccines. We have been particularly interested in understanding why BCG vaccination induces different biosignatures in different settings. We are also interested in how TB treatment modulates immune and gene expression signatures, and in how co-morbidity with helminth infections or diabetes impact on immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The laboratory has also worked on simple whole blood assays for use in field studies, and on harmonising assays that could be used in vaccine trials.
