Biography:
Ivo Steinmetz is Professor of Hygiene and Microbiology at the Medical University of Graz, Austria and Head of the Institute of Hygiene, Microbiology and Environmental Medicine. After gaining his MD degree from the University of Mainz and periods of postdoctoral research he attended the Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London, where he became interested in melioidosis. In this context, he was a visiting scientist in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit. His current research focuses on developing molecular and serological diagnostics for B. pseudomallei, investigating antibacterial immune mechanisms, and exploring the environmental distribution of B. pseudomallei. Passionate about global health, he works with healthcare manufacturers to translate innovative diagnostic tools into clinical practice.
