Biography:
Jomien Mouton obtained her PhD in Genetics from Stellenbosch University in South Africa in 2014, where she contributed to identifying modifiers of cardiac structure and functions in South African families with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. She then expanded her research expertise by taking up a post-doctoral position with Professor Samantha Sampson in the Host-Pathogen Mycobactomics Research Group at Stellenbosch University. Her post-doctoral work focused on establishing and validating a new dual-reporter system that can be utilised to identify and isolate “persister” populations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which are the underlying cause of latent M. tuberculosis infections and the reason for the lengthy period of antibiotic treatment. She now aims to apply this tool in combination with flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting to elucidate currently unanswered questions about the physiology and characteristics of persistent M. tuberculosis with the purpose to improve diagnosis and treatment outcome.
