VALIDATE ECR Workshop Series 2021: Research Project & Grant Management for Researchers

Description of the workshop
This workshop was aimed at helping VALIDATE Early Career Researchers widen and improve non-technical skills necessary to progress their careers. Sam, who is an experienced research project manager, takes you through her tips to plan and run a successful research project and to manage your research grants - the main point being to keep a defined project running efficiently, so that it finishes on time and on budget, and achieves its original aims. Topics that were discussed included:
- Planning projects and project timelines
- Managing a project
- Budgeting and financial management
- Contracts and contractual obligations
- Reporting to funders
This workshop was part of the VALIDATE Network 2021 online ECR Workshop Series and was open to any VALIDATE member who would find it helpful.
Speaker: Samantha Vermaak
Since its inception in 2017, Sam has managed the VALIDATE Network, a UK Medical Research Council (MRC) project that now has >400 members from 60 countries.
Prior to this she worked as Prof Helen McShane's TB group Programme Manager for seven years, where she was responsible for project managing all Jenner Institute TB vaccine clinical trials in the UK and Africa (19 in total; phase I to phase IIb efficacy trials) from planning through to close-out, and leading the TB clinical team effectively to successfully complete their projects. Her role involved working closely with collaborators in academia, industry, non-profits and government bodies in the UK, Africa, USA and Europe. She managed all the McShane group research grants during that period and has managed research grants totalling >£28 million to date.
Sam co-taught the University of Oxford 'Essentials of Project Management' course in 2013-2015.
