ECR Workshop 2024

VALIDATE ECR Workshop

On Monday, 15th July 2024, the VALIDATE Early Career Researcher (ECR) Workshop took place at the Avani+ Riverside Hotel. The workshop focused on providing early-career researchers with the skills necessary to secure research funding.

Deliverd by Nick Burger from Scriptoria, a leading provider of training for international organisations and research centres, the workshop delved into the intricacies of the grant proposal process. Participants received comprehensive guidance on drafting compelling abstracts, writing about research impact, and navigating the proposal review process. The morning sessions included valuable insights into crafting executive and lay summaries, writing statements of need, and identifying suitable funding opportunities. Notable speakers included Dr Alison Kraigsley from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr Mariana Delfino-Machin from the Medical Research Council, and Mrs Samantha Vermaak from VALIDATE.

The afternoon was dedicated to work-planning, linking research outputs to outcomes, budgeting, and understanding the professional writing and editing cycle. Attendees participated in practical exercises designed to refine their proposals and communicate their research to a broader audience effectively.

The workshop was a valuable opportunity for early-career researchers to develop essential grant writing skills, positioning them for success in their future academic endeavours.
